Pollution
Pollution
Somewhere beneath the rolling thunder of tires,
the screeching breaks, the honks and beeps,
beneath the cell phone jingles,
the message alerts,
the clak clak clak of bicycle spokes,
beneath the endless chatter;
the sighs, the yelps, the laughter.
Even beneath the church bell
that carries over the rooftops
reminding us of the hour.
Beneath it all, somewhere, there is silence.
But, if we were to hear it

FINE
Fine
Fine is the word to hide all
It is the conversation ender
It is the building blocks of illusions in the mind
Its what every one mumbles
if asked if they're alright
"I'm fine"
they lie
their heads held up high
in false pride
"I'm fine"
they lie
when inside they
are crying
"I'm fine"
is always the last thing
on their mind
Desprately clinging
to that line
"I'm fine"
Fine is the word
that rolls from the tongue
before anything else
be it the painful truth
Or the sweetened lies
Fine is alway the catch all
its what we all hide behind
We're Fine

Unlike most of my other haiku, this effort was not prompted by something I saw. Instead, a word sprang to mind, and I found myself wondering what I could do with it -- and that led to this ...
Oh, and the word I originally thought of? Well, it never made the final version...
Update: For those who are wondering, the original word that got me thinking along these lines in the first place was "pelagic" (obvious really... )
Edit, Jan 2004: I am currently working through my gallery and providing a " proper" preview image for those deviations that didn't originally have one. I apologise to all those watching me if this causes these old poems to be flagged as "new". The image in this thumbnail is from Sea Wave, by ~ spirit-stock.
